Lot 766

Van Rijn, Rembrandt (Dutch 1606-1669). A Young Man Seated & Standing (The Walking Trainer). Etching laid on paper. Nowell-Eusticke's fifth state of seven, with six strong horizontal lines covering the blank patch on the cushion beneath the seated man.

The subject is a compressed scene: looking into a room, where two youthful, scantily clad men dominate the left side of the page. However, the heart of the print is the faint scene behind them where a kneeling mother is encouraging her toddler to walk. The child stands in a surprisingly modern-looking contraption with four little wheels -- a walker! Print size: 7-3/4'' x 5-1/8''. Print archivally mounted in a substantial, large and ornate gilt frame measuring: 21-3/4" x 19".
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
