Lot 753

(Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) Original Painting of Sleepy. 6½" high handpainted cel of the dwarf "Sleepy" by Mali McCormack, who was one of the painters and inkers at Disney. The painting of Sleepy is overlaid on another painted cel of a chair, on which a smiling Sleepy has climbed so that he can ring the chimes which are painted with him on the top cel. The two cels are on a 7" x 6½" background. Written on the back is "Property of Mali McCormick yr 1941 'Sleepy' Original ptg. from Disney Productions Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs." This 65-year-old piece is absolutely charming and only needs to be matted and framed.

We don't know the purpose of this painting, since the film came out in 1937. We know that Miss McCormack was already working at Disney by 1940, because she participated in an "Exhibition of Animal Studies by and for Disney Employees" that was held June 3-15, 1940 on the Dialog Stage in Burbank. She was also a member of the Screen Cartoonists Guild which was organized in 1941. In those days, painting and inking were the only jobs women were allowed to have at Disney. Since they received no film credits, it is difficult to obtain information about individual painters and inkers.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.
From the estate of Mali McCormack.
