Lot 705

(Beatles) Rare 1st Proof of George Harrison's Somewhere In England Album Cover. Original unfolded, uncut printer's proof for the original album sleeve design rejected by Warner Bros, with white border and proofing bars and the original track-listing. Mounted to board measuring 19" x 26". Black and white cover art by Basil Pao featuring George's left profile facing a map of the British Isles. Very good; light toning to white borders, a couple of small corner creases, and one small edge tear.

When the album was delivered to Warner Bros. in September 1980, this version was rejected, and the studio wanted four of the ten tracks removed: Tears Of The World, Sat Singing, Lay His Head and Flying Hour, to be replaced by All Those Years Ago, Blood From A Clone, Teardrops and That Which I Have Lost. The original artwork was also rejected and a full-color cover was later photographed in London's Tate Gallery. The 2004 CD issue of the album reinstated the original artwork; however, the artist title/text was placed along the top edge in one line, whereas the original is lower down in the right corner with the title on three lines, and in a different font from Harrison's name.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
Ex. Dr. Kerr estate.
