Louvain Bible, 1599. Venice: Damianum Zenarum. Title page reads, in part: "Biblia, Ad Vetvstissima Exemplaria Nunc recens castigata. In Qvibvs, Praeter Ea Qvae subsequens Praefatio indicat, capita singula ita versibus distincta sunt…." Elaborately decorated title page with a woodcut border. 1,126 pp with 600 text woodcut illustrations based on designs by Hans Holbein, Bernard Salomon, and Pierre Eskrich. 8vo, green and black marbled boards with black leather binding, having four raised bands with "BIBLIA 1599 embossed in gold. Two pages are loose; varied toning throughout. Cover have some dings and scratches. This Renaissance imprint is a scarce reissue of the Louvain Bible, copying the preface of the Belgian editor Johannes Hentenius Mechliniensis (1547), followed by the various prefaces prepared by Hieronymus. Divided into the text proper (pp1-1050), the Hebraicarum et Chaldaicarum nominum interpretatio (pp1051-56), an Index rerum (pp1057-1106), and the Index epistolarum (liturgical calendar, pp1107-26). There are 341 woodcuts in the Old Testament and Apocrypha and 259 woodcuts in the New Testament. (Ex Libris).
