Bancroft, George & Henry A. Anthony. Bancroft (1800-1891) was a historian and statesman. As U.S. Secretary of the Navy (Mar., 1845–Sept., 1846) he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and issued the standing orders under which Capt. John D. Sloat seized California ports on the outbreak of the Mexican War. LS as Secretary of the Navy, with 16 words added in his own hand, 1p, 9¾" x 8", Navy Dept., Washington, 1846 Feb. 23. Fine. Marked "Unofficial" and addressed to Commander F(ranklin) Buchanan, the first Superintendent at Annapolis, asking advice on whether a court martial or a severe reprimand would be the proper punishment for two young men.

Henry Anthony (1815-1884) Republican Senator from Rhode Island, served for several years as President Pro Tempore of the Senate. ALS, 2pp on U.S. Senate Chamber stationery, 8" x 5", Washington, 1872 June 6. To Dr. E.M. Grow, regarding his appointment by the President to the St. Petersburg Congress. Fine.
