Bancroft, George & Henry A. Anthony. Bancroft (1800-1891) was a historian and statesman. As U.S. Secretary of the Navy (Mar., 1845–Sept., 1846) he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and issued the standing orders under which Capt. John D. Sloat seized California ports on the outbreak of the Mexican War. LS as Secretary of the Navy, with 16 words added in his own hand, 1p, 9¾" x 8", Navy Dept., Washington, 1846 Feb. 23. Fine. Marked "Unofficial" and addressed to Commander F(ranklin) Buchanan, the first Superintendent at Annapolis, asking advice on whether a court martial or a severe reprimand would be the proper punishment for two young men.
