Lot 184

Bernhardt, Sarah (1844-1923) World-famous French actress; called "The Divine Sarah." ALS on embossed, personal letterhead, in French, 1½pp (recto of conjoined sheets), 5" x 3¾", n.p., 1877. Very fine. To her road manager, Mr. Bertrand, with excellent theatrical content. In part: "Mademoiselle Plenaud will not be able to come to Monte Carlo. Mademoiselle Colombier will play in 'Le Passant' with me. the fact that she has already played the role will please me as well as her…." With English translation. Colombier wrote a scandalous book, humorously titled Sarah Barnum, about Bernhardt's 1880 American tour. Bernhardt went ballistic, bursting into Colombier's home, breaking everything in sight and beating her with a horsewhip. What drama!
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
