Great Britain. Crown, 1654. S.3214; ESC-7 (Rarity-3); Dav-3772. Commonwealth Period, 1649-1660. Mint mark, Sun. Shield of England enclosed within a wreath. Legend: THE COMMONWEALTH OF ENGLAND. Reverse Shields of England and Ireland conjoined, with date above and legend GOD WITH VS. Mark of value (V Shillings) above shields. Struck from slightly buckled dies. The flan is unusually round and the strike is exceptionally clean, without the typical doubled letters so frequently seen, even on the nicest coins. Dies only slightly rotated. Dark gray surfaces. Most pleasing and very rare. NGC graded AU-53.
