Lot 384

Great Britain. Shilling, ND. S.2799. Charles I, 1625-1649. Mint mark triangle. Group F. Sixth large Briot's bust. Type 4.4, with lace collar and double arched crown. Reverse Square topped shield over cross. Crudely made hammered Charles I Tower Mint shillings just don't come better than this. Many of the 'hoard' coins secreted away during the Civil War period are weakly struck, misshapen and subsequently cleaned. this is a selected, fully round specimen which has been carefully made and then retained in a numismatic collection since the mid-17th century. Delightful pastel blue old cabinet toning complements the traces of original luster. Very rare thus. NGC graded AU-55.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.
The Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection.
