Great Britain. Pattern Silver Groat, 1601. Peck-8; North-2050. Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Facing ornate bust of Queen in ruff and jewelled dress. Reverse Royal monogram crowned, and legend CONSERVATRIX AFFLICTORVM. Date, 1601, divided by the crown as with the pledge penny. Edge plain. Attractively toned with an excellent portrait. Cast and lightly chased in the fields to the sides of the bust and reverse monogram. Described by Peck as 'very rare', this specimen certainly has one of the finest numismatic portraits of the Queen extant. Sold by Spink of London some time ago. Choice Very Fine.
