Lot 3270

1884 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely golden colors on both sides. Housed in an old green holder. A nice cameo look. Only 106 Proofs struck. Any advanced numismatist would give the world to own such a splendid Gem Proof $3 that clearly has naturally toned, undipped surfaces stretching from the center outwards. Appealing light apricot-orange color flows throughout the fields and converges on the portrait, where the warmest saturation occurs. The coin glows. It really does. The fields reflect the high grade in more ways than we could express in a short description like this. The obverse, as seen from the photographs, is the lesser toned of the two sides, and displays nice reflective qualities. Having that in mind, although it isn't stated on the holder, Liberty's portrait has a touch of frost, giving the coin the two-tone look beloved by generations of collectors. The more fully developed reverse toning has the same glow, with similar warm saturation and beauty as the obverse. Since only 106 Proofs were struck (and a fair percentage of this issue reached circulation during the troublesome 1930s decade), Proofs of the caliber found here are precious reminders of an earlier, bygone era in American numismatics. A rarity not to be overlooked!

Identification can be deduced by a small toned oval a millimeter or two below Liberty's bust, and also cognizance should be made of the (early) PCGS serial #04592497. Pop 9; 1 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 8048) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

Realized $31,050
