Lot 3263

1874 $3 Gold. NGC graded MS-64. Mostly untoned and a nice strike. Clean as a whistle for this mid-level grade, as one would look forward to from the grading service's opinion; however, what really makes this break free from others is its unique dancing cartwheel luster that rolls around each side. The luster on $3 gold pieces has an undulating effect to it, possibly the result of the narrow wide planchets used to differentiate them from the $2.50 denominations. Pop 75; 13 finer, 11 in 65, 1 in 65 star, and 1 in 66 (PCGS # 7998) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Realized $8,625
