Lot 3188

1888 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded Proof 64. Nice even golden toning. Only 1,079 Proofs struck. This is a blemish-free case in point of the Proof 1888 issue in this grade: sleek deep yellow to orange gold in color, with mint sparkle that grabs hold for the full effect of the careful preservation since it was made. Needless, too, to remind bidders is the fact that the coin shows outstanding detail and a clear, even strike. Identifiable by a single tiny toned spot on the obverse at the E of STATES, and a similar area of toning on the reverse along the edge at 2:00. From the collector's point of view, a Proof Gold Dollar like this constitutes the biggest thing in life, a marvel in miniature of Mint workmanship, and a fact that hasn't changed in more than a century and a half of active numismatic collecting in this country! Pop 27; 41 finer (PCGS # 7638) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Realized $4,830
