Lot 3101

1922 Grant Half Dollar, with star. PCGS graded MS-64. Natural toning on both sides. A key date to this series. Only 4,256 made. Well detailed with very choice mint luster for this often dullish release, including broad areas of white frostiness. In the period in which this coin was made, weak strikes predominate on Grant's hair detail and beard. That is why it is a pleasure to report a strike with much better precision only now and then found. A star that appeared on the first issues was later removed, creating a second variety. The star has no particular significance. Laura Gardin Fraser designed both the Grant half dollar and gold dollar. Fraser (1889 - 1966) was an American sculptor and the wife of James Earle Fraser of Buffalo nickel fame. (She was the winner of the 1931 competition to design a new quarter with George Washington on the obverse, although Joseph Flanagan's design was the one adopted.) (PCGS # 9307) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.
