Lot 2635

1837 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Browning-1, R4. Nice original toning on both sides. Excellent strike. On this piece the diagnostic die crack through D STATE on the reverse is quite pronounced, and if the crack above D connected with the rim it would be a retained cud. The obverse shows another lengthy die break in the lower region affecting star 1, the end of the bust, and continuing on back across star 13 to the rim. A lovely coin overall, the satin-like surfaces have golden brown peripheries that deepen around the denticles to crimson-purple in a few places, with an occasional dab of blue intermingled. Sharply struck throughout, there are no objectionable abrasions on either side of this lustrous small sized Capped Bust quarter (PCGS # 5356) .

Six die varieties are known for the quarter dollar coinage dated 1837, from three obverse and four reverse dies. The quarter dollar mintage for the year was reported as 252,400 coins.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,700.

Realized $3,450
