1942 Mercury Dime. NGC graded Proof 68. A near perfect white gem. Proof Mercury dimes were not sold to collectors until 1936. The main challenge facing the mint with this coin was its uneven "basining" due to the intricacies of Weinman's design compared to the flatter 19th century coin designs. Finally, the mint bowed to requests from collectors after it had perfected the techniques of mirror-polishing the dies. Nevertheless, throughout the small Proof production runs each year, the dies had to be reground and repolished from time to time. Pop 75; 8 finer; 7 in 68 Star; 1 in 69.
