Lot 2579

1804 Draped Bust Dime. 14 stars. NGC graded VF-20. Light golden toning. Very rare variety. A total 8,265 dimes minted in 1804. This is an extremely important opportunity for the early dime specialist. Perhaps only about 100 examples of this date are known in all grades. Two die varieties are known for the 1804 dime coinage, with distinctly different reverse dies having either 13 stars or 14 stars. Curiously, both dies were also used for the quarter eagle series. This 14 star variety is slightly rarer than the other variety among early dimes. It is listed as Rarity 5 by Logan, this is the second use of the obverse die after 1804 JR-1 and the second use of the reverse die after 1804 Breen-1 quarter eagles. The obverse has light scratches in the surface behind the head, from the chin across the neck, and in the right obverse field from the forehead to a star. Light to medium old-silver patina with lightest color on the high points of the design. Shows few rim dentils. Tops of legends worn on the reverse. Full E PLURIBUS UNUM visible on the scroll, and a complete shield. To reiterate: a very rare opportunity for the Bust Dime specialist to acquire this elusive issue. Pop 1; 2 finer @ NGC, 1 in 40, 1 in 58 (PCGS # 4475) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 24,000.
