Lot 2220

1825 N-9 R2 Double Struck. NGC graded AU-58. Frosty steel brown with lustrous golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas and slightly darker steel toning on the highpoints. No defects, only very light friction on the highest points of the design. An attractive cent to start with, and it gets better. This piece was double struck, a feature that could be missed if given only a casual glance. The cent was struck properly but the reverse stuck to the die and a new planchet was inserted at least a third of the way into the press before the two planchets were struck again (second time for the first one, first time for the second one). The second impression caused significant shift doubling on the left side of the reverse, strongest at STATES, ON in ONE, C in CENT, and in the wreath between these areas. On the obverse the new blank planchet left a dull impression arcing from the rim just below star 5 to the face, eye, and bust tip. A very attractive cent and a neat mint error. EAC grade AU50. The double strike feature is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
