Lot 2046

1806 C-4 R1 Large 6 with Stems. Double Struck. PCGS graded VG-10. Rather glossy chocolate and steel brown with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints. The surfaces show some loose dirt but they are free of corrosion and have only a few minor contact marks, including a thin rim nick over the I in LIBERTY. This piece would be nothing special except for the fact it was dramatically double struck and has two dates. The initial strike was 90% off center leaving only the date and opposing TED from UNITED on the planchet. The misstruck piece was then reinserted into the press and struck properly. The complete 1806 date from the off-center impression shows clearly at the bottom of the lowest curl while the opposing TED shows at the tops of NITE. The reverse is also rotated 80 degrees CW from a normal head-to-foot orientation, but rotations such as this are not uncommon for the variety. A really neat mint error. EAC grade VG8. The off-center double strike feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $250 - 500.
