Lot 19

Macedon. Akanthos, c. 430-390 BC. AR tetradrachm (14.51g). Unique? Lion right, pouncing on bull kneeling to left; small retrograde swastika above. Reverse: Legend around quadripartite square which is raised and granulated, all within shallow incuse square. Coin apparently unpublished in usual references. Minor doubling seen on reverse. Flan of unusually good metal, with some residual luster. Nearly Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
The swastika emblem is common enough on the tetrobol coins of this series, but is still without precedent for the tetradrachms. The Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection.

Realized $2,645
