Lot 1646

1854 Type 2. AU-50. More than just a little luster present on both sides. The new Indian Princess motif was designed (and the dies engraved) by James Barton Longacre, who worked at the mint from 1844 until his death in 1869. Longacre adapted a version of his wreath of cereals for the reverse. The almost identical design was used on the $3 gold pieces introduced this year. In 1854 the mint struck both Type 1 (Liberty head) and Type 2 (Indian) gold dollars.
Estimated Value $400 - 425.

Realized $564
