Sicily. Syracuse. Time of Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Gold 20 Litrae - Tetradrachm (1.14 g), struck c. 405 BC. Head of a young Herakles left, wearing lion's skin headdress; ethnic at left. Reverse: Stepped quadripartite incuse square, with small female head in deeper incuse circle. SNG Cop. 685; cf. SNG ANS 350-356 (all with ethnic in stepped incuse). Faint old scratch to left of Herakles; a couple bumps to edge of flan. Very Fine / Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $600 - 750.
Ex Edward Gans, Numismatic Fine Arts, New York City; paper envelope with stock no. 8618, then priced at $45 (!!!).
