Lot 13

Lucania. Heraclea, c. 390-340 BC. AR Nomos (7.37g). Head of Athena right, in crested Attic helmet decorated with griffin. Reverse: Herakles turned right, strangling Nemean lion; ethnic clockwise along right edge; shell at left. Cf. Van Keuren 47 (Scylla on helmet); cf. HN Italy 1376 (Scylla on helmet). Bold strike, in very handsome style, with blackish hoard patina. Coin possibly Unique! Nearly Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,750.
Ex ADM Collection, NAC Sale O (5-13-04), lot 1090. The griffin seen on this helmet is employed on some issues earlier in the series at Heraclea (cf. HN Italy nos. 1366-1368), but is apparantly unknown afterwards. This coin is not thought of as a hybrid, since the wing type on the griffin coins is distinctly different from that seen here. The Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection.

Realized $1,610
