Lot 4823

Peru. 8 Escudos, 1772-JM (Lima). Fr-32; KM-82.2. Charles III. Older standard bust to right. Reverse: Large crowned Hapsburg arms within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Mintmark at lower right and assayers' initials at lower left, separated by fleece. Value 8 - S at left and right of shield. NGC graded AU-53.

The mintmark on this piece is to the right of the Golden Fleece at the bottom of the reverse, rather than to its left which became the standard position in late 1773. This early subtype with the mintmark to the right of the Golden Fleece, was produced only during parts of 1772 and 1773. Both date are quite rare, this first year particularly so. Very few choice examples are known.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Realized $2,300
