Lot 4477

Great Britain. Gold Half Pound, ND. S.2535A; Fr-215. Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Fifth issue. Mint mark, tun (1591-5). Bust of Queen facing left wearing, elaborate dress. Reverse: Crowned shield of arms. This very ornate type of Elizabethan half pound is considerably rarer than the plainer style half pound (S.2520) and probably much rarer than the pound piece in the top grades. This specimen, struck in the period 1591-1595 has prooflike fields, an abundance of original luster and is (very sharply) struck on a larger than average flan. An examination of the detail evident in the heraldic lions of the second and third quarters of the reverse shield must lead to the conclusion that in parts this is as finely made as any English hammered gold piece. There is a tiny area of weakness on the obverse, which corresponds on the reverse, but this is not surprising in a coin of this period. What is surprising is the sheer beauty and great eye appeal of this late 16th century numismatic masterpiece. NGC graded AU-55.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.
