Transylvania. Ducat, 1650. Fr-399; Resch-19; Hess-899; KM-274. 3.48 grams. 22.12 mm. Nagbanya mint. Georg II Rakoczi, 1648-1660. Armored sleder half bust right with hat, breaking legend above and below. Scepter over right shoulder and saber hilt in left hand. Leg: .GEO:RA. - D:G.P.TRA. Reverse: Madonna seated with child on right arm and scepter in left. N-B on either side. Leg: PAR.REG.HVN - DO.ET.SI:CO.1650. A splendid example with lovely original fresh mint luster. NGC graded MS-63.

George Racoczi II lost a major battle to the Poles. This provided the excuse for the Turks to enter the territory, depose the prince, and appoint their own Transylvanian vassal, Michael Apafi. This could not be permitted by the Habsburgs, so the delicate balance of power that allowed Transylvania to prosper ended.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Realized $4,830
