Transylvania. Ducat, 1629. Fr-366; Resch-498; Hess-702. Nagybanya mint. 3.45 grams. 22.9 mm. Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629. Bare headed portrait not breaking inner circle and legend. Leg: GAB.D:G.SA.RO.IM. - ET.TRAN.PRIN*. Reverse: Madonna and child in 'flames', shield below. Leg: PAR.R.HVN.DO.SICO - OP.RAT.DUX. 1629. NGC graded MS-61.

Transylvania was not liked by the Habsburgs, mostly because of its Protestant faith. Yet the Habsburgs stayed away for over a century, as long as Transylvania fought the Turks. The old adage, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", applied here.
