Basel. Goldgulden ND (c.1644). Fr-25a variant. City coinage. 3.24 grams. 21.75 mm. Obv: Round cartouche with arms. Leg: + MON.NOVA.AVREA.BASILEENSIS. Reverse: Cross and orb within hexafoil. Leg: + DOMINE.CONSERVA.NOS.IN.PACE. Rare. NGC graded AU-58.

Basel was a very important port city in central Europe. Located on the Rhine, it served as an important port for goods destined throughout Germany. It was a wealthy city that needed to be free of strife to prosper. The staff of Basel is found prominently on almost all of its coins.
