Russia. Novodel Ducat, ND. Fr-58a (48a); Kaim-1857. 3.63 grams. 18.38 mm. Sophia, Regent for Peter I and Ivan V, 1682-1689. Obv: Bust of Sophia, within two beaded circles. Leg: Star. I G B Ts I K I A V V I I R I Reverse: Busts of Ivan V and Peter with imperial eagle above. Leg: + B M V G Ts I A P A. NGC graded MS-64.

Peter the Great was the son of Tsar Alexis from his second wife, and Ivan was a son from the first wife. The families of both vied for the throne upon Alexis' death. Sophia was appointed regent, since Peter was a minor, and Ivan was a semi-imbecile. Sophia was from the first wife, and an opponenet of Peter. When Peter became of age, Sohia was banished to a convent.
