Danzig. Ducat, 1586. Fr-3; Gum-798; Cz-770. 3.51 grams. 21.53 mm. Stephan Bathori, 1576-1586. Obv. Crowned portrait bust right. Leg: .STEPHANVS.D.G.REX.POL.D.PRVS. Reverse: City arms within beaded circle. Leg: MONE.NO.AVR.CIVI.GEDANENSIS. NGC graded MS-60.

Stephen of Transylvania was was not the first choice of the Polish Diet. They had elected Henry of Valois, but when he inherited the French throne, he left for Paris. Yet Stephen turned out to be an excellent king. In fact, he added Danzig and Livonia to the Polish holdings.
