Denmark. Ducat, 1651. Fr-77; Hede-7; KM-171. 3.42 grams. 22.24 mm. Frederik III, 1648-1670. Laureate bust over date. Leg: FRIDERICVS. III .D.GRADANIAE. Reverse: Legend in circle. NOR .VAN. GOTO. QVE. Frederick was one of those historical figures who was more lucky than good. He attempted to re-establish Danish influence, fought the Swedes and lost. Yet soon after, the Swedish king died, and he avoided a humiliating peace. In fact, the Treaty of Copenhagen after the war gained him much. Later, a constitutional revolution forced the nobles to cede much of their power to the monarchy. Thus Frederick became more powerful both domestically and internationally without taking any positive steps.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
