Russia. Early Historical Series. Undated (late 18th cent.) AE Medal, 78.5mm, signed J.B. Gass. On the Arrival of Ryurik and His Brothers at the Russian Border. Grand Duke Ryurik of Novgorod in military uniform with shield and helmet/ Ryurik, Sineus and Truvor with entourage survey the approach to the Russian border. With series number "3" at lower right and date 861 in exergue. Smirnov-65. Ryurik was the legendary leader who consolidated the eastern Slavic tribes into a single state called Rus, the beginning of the Russian nation. A few minor edge nicks, otherwise Extremely Fine.
