Diocletian, 284-305 AD. Gold Aureus (5.47 g), Siscia mint, struck 286 AD. Extremely Rare; one of only four examples known!. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left, with Diocletian's hand raised in salutation. Reverse: Jupiter stands frontal, head right, holding long scepter and thunderbolt; IOVI CONSERVATORI. Cf. RIC 248; Calico 4498; Kent-Hirmer 581 (same dies); cf. Triton I, lot 1656 (same dies); Fr --. Superb armored bust of Diocletian, lustrous and brilliant. Small contact mark on Jupiter's thigh, otherwise virtually as struck. Outstanding numismatic art for this late period. Superb Extremely Fine.
