Attica. Athens, 168/5-50 BC. AR "New Style" Tetradrachm (16.99g), struck c. 81/80 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet, decorated with palmette and griffin. Reverse: Owl right, on overturned amphora; ethnic and magistrate's names across field; figure of Demeter at right holding torch, all within olive wreath. Thompson 1188-b (same dies). Some peripheral striking flatness, but Athena's portrait still prettier than typical. Attractive old toning, with iridescent touches of copper and green. Near Extremely Fine.
