Thessaly. Larissa, c. 340-320 BC. AR Didrachm (12.42 g). Diademed head of the nymph Larissa, with flowing hair, facing slightly left, wearing pendant earring and necklace. Reverse: Muscular horse prancing right, wearing loose bridle about neck; ΛAPI -- ΣAIΩN. Lorber, Hoard, phase L-III, 64-68 var. (orientation of ethnic); Herrmann Group VII, pl. V, 1; McClean 4611; Weber 2848; Dewing 1397. Well centered on unusually ample flan, and boldly struck from dies of refined style, particularly for the portrait of this series. Fine, even, medium to deep gray toning, with hints of iridescent russets, violets, and blues. An outstanding example of this numismatic work of art! Extremely Fine.
