Lot 2814

Titus, A.D. 79-81. Gold Aureus (7.34g), minted at Rome as Caesar by Vespasian, A.D. 71/2. . RIC-160 (Vesp). . BMC 83. C. 391. Laureate head right of Titus. Reverse: Mourning personification of Judaea seated right with palm tree behind; on other side of palm tree, Titus, in military attire, holding spear and parazonium. Attractive Very Fine.

On a majority of this reverse type, regardless of denomination, it seems clearly a youthful figure (Titus) who is portrayed. It could just as well be Vespasian. The toning on this lovely aureus is typical of coins found from the Boscoreale hoard.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 17,500.

Realized $42,550
