Lot 2800

Vespasian, A.D. 69-79. AE Sestertius, Rome mint, struck A.D. 71. . RIC-425. . C. 236. H-773. Laureate head right of Vespasian. Reverse: Mourning personification of Judaea seated right under palm; behind, male standing left, hands bound, turning head back right. Attractive bluish-green patina; Nearly Extremely Fine.

In cataloguing the Judaea Capta coinage of Rome, it seems like there are more subvarieties of this series than any other commemorative type. Not only do the inscriptions vary, like IVDEA or IVDAEA and the obverse titles of the emperor, but literally dozens of reverse portrayals exist. On this lovely specimen, the male figure is standing to left with head reverted, giving the viewer a greater feeling of compassion for the captives, as the figures long for their homeland.
Estimated Value $2,750 - 3,750.

Realized $4,600
