Lot 2713

Aelia Capitolina. Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus, d. 217 C.E. AE 16. . Mesh. ("Aelia") 83. Kadman 39. Draped bust right of Julia Domna. Reverse: Nemesis standing left. Choice Very Fine.

Nemesis is the Greek goddess associated with rightful retribution. On this reverse she is seen holding her chiton open in order to spit upon her breast (her standard gesture of aversion); a wheel, symbolizing "what goes around comes around", is at her feet. It reminds the cataloguer of the wonderful pre-federal American coppers of Dr. Samuel Higley and his brother John. Readers may remember with fondness the inscriptions on these very rare tokens dated 1737: "Value me as you please", "I am good copper", "I cut my way through", and most appropriately for our goddess Nemesis, "The wheele goes round". It still does today.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Realized $173
