Lot 2709

Capitolias. Geta, 209-212 C.E. AE 26 dated year 108 (204/5 C.E.). . Spij. 20. Ros. 14. Bare-headed and cuirassed bust right of Geta. Reverse: Bust of Alexander the Great right. Large flan; Choice Very Fine.

The Rosenberger reference doesn't identify the reverse portrayal ("Bust r., draped"), while the Spijkerman volume states "Bust of Alexander r." The future emperor Severus Alexander wasn't born until c. 208 C.E., so he meant Alexander the Great, which is a highly unusual type for city coinage, but nevertheless was used at Capitolias under Commodus. This would explain the reference to Macedon in the inscription.
Estimated Value $300 - 450.

Realized $173
