Lot 1771

1898 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. Only 75 proofs struck. A nice brilliant example. Official Mint records list 75 Proof double eagle struck 1898. We have no reason to doubt this figure, but find it unlikely that even as many as one-half the mintage is left in collectors' hands. With Proof issues of virtually all other denominations produced in 1898, the $20 had an often strong cameo appearance. Both sides are glisten in fresh yellow-gold color that yields to a pale orange tone in the fields at indirect angles. The devices are fully struck up and sharp edged including all lettering. Perhaps needless to say for a very choice cameo Proof gold coin, the eye appeal is extraordinary. Pop 1; 3 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 89114) .
Estimated Value $23,000 - 25,000.

Realized $25,300
