Lot 1412

1901 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo PQ. A glittering Premium Quality gem with a touch of tone adhering to the extreme borders. Both silver and gold Proof sets struck after 1901 were produced with a no-contrast "all brilliant" finish. This lasted until the Matte and Sandblast Proofs were launched in 1908, and it was not until the 1950s that a high contrast look returned once more to some Proofs sold to collectors. The 1901 Morgan offered in this lot is noteworthy as a scarce issue in high grade, Mint State or Proof. The coin, being the last in a long line of Cameo Proofs, attains its high grade through careful methods of manufacture, and just as careful preservation by generations of devoted collectors. The cameo effect is what makes it the basis of PCGS's technical '66 grade. It certainly rules the roost when it comes to its deeply reflective fields and near flawless surfaces. Added to which, just the slightest trace of golden amber toning hugs the rim on each side. An outstanding, honestly graded Gem Proof striking from this important year. Pop 7; none finer. We believe this is the finest of the seven graded. 813 proofs struck (PCGS # 87336) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 15,000.
