Lot 1166

1873 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. No arrows, closed 3. NGC graded Proof 67. Encased in NGC holder 2199656-002. Wonderful rainbow toning on both sides. Only 600 Proofs were struck without the arrows on the obverse, but only one other possess both this high technical grade from NGC. The specimen offered here doesn't just "exhibit" toning, it really flaunts it! Gorgeous colors whose vibrancy can only be hinted at by the (admittedly excellent) photographs. A needle-sharp strike accompanies the toning pyrotechnics. Given the high NGC certification, it stands to reason the surfaces would be impeccably preserved, and they are, displaying no significant hairlines and full swirling mirror reflectivity. Of course, the average collector's view of what constitutes the biggest thing in life had to change once dependable third-party grading came around in the mid-1980s. With this service followed the statistics, compiled by NGC (and PCGS) after many hundreds of thousands of coin submittals for grading. To this point in time (April 2007), the NGC census will take your breath: Pop 2; none finer (PCGS # 6431) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

Realized $27,600
