Lot 1035

1796 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-64. Very well struck with nearly full breast feathers visable. The planchet is problem-free and all is overlaid with gorgeous natural violet, deepening at the borders with a hint of irridescence. Pleasing dappled appearance. A wonderful example of the first American dime. The two-year Type features a draped bust of Liberty combined with the scarce small eagle reverse. JR-4 with a berry below the E in UNITED on the reverse. Pop 18; 7 in 65; 7 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 4461) .

Rarity-4. JR-4 is a scarcer die pairing from this highly collectible premier issue, estimated to represent about 10 percent of the surviving population of 1796 Dimes. It is one of the best produced die marriages for the year and can be recognized by the tips of leaves being aligned with the edges of the A in STATES and the F in OF. Additionally, the TY in LIBERTY is joined at the top of the letters.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.
