Lot 1

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling. . Noe-4 Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-64. Type with a pair of backwards N's in legend. Very attractive glossy dark bluish steel gray with traces of frosty mint luster remaining in protected areas. No planchet flaws or contact marks. The planchet displays the usual gentle wave seen on pieces struck using the rocker press. The only defects are a couple microscopic specks of scale or crud at LA in ENGLAND. The obverse is well centered on the nearly round planchet, only the tops of HV in MASATHVSETS tight to the edge. The reverse is slightly off center to K-10 leaving the tops of NGLAN of ENGLAND barely off the planchet. The legends are devices are all fully struck up creating a truly superior example of this popular and historic early colonial issue. Fully comparable to the best examples found in the Hain and Ford collections, and arguably the pick of the litter. Weight listed as 66.4 grains on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $40,000 - 50,000.
