Gold-Mounted Steatite Scarab. Egypt, Middle Kingdom. 12th Dynasty, c. 1991-1786 BC. Neatly carved scarab, the base engraved with scroll pattern. The beetle's thorax and wing cases each inletted and set with a shaped piece of blue glass paste -- the whole set into a gold-electrum frame with cylindrical spacers at each end. Scarab nicely preserved, with a fair amount of original blue-green glaze remaining. Length: 23 mm.
