Dean, James (1931 - 1955) American actor who epitomized the youthful rebellion of the 1950s and who became a cult figure after his tragic, early death. In 1955 Dean received an Academy Award nomination for his role in East of Eden. Two more starring roles followed: Rebel Without a Cause, also in 1955, and the posthumously-released 1956 production of Giant, for which he was also nominated for an Academy Award. Dean is one of only five people to be nominated for Best Actor for his first feature role, and the only person to be nominated twice after his death.
