1863 Autograph Book From Alfred University. A handsome 8" x 5½" hard-cover book, 48-pages with gold-stamped title and gold-edged pages. Filled with notations and autographs, dated from 1862 to 1865, by male and female students who were attending Alfred University, the second-oldest coeducational institution in the United States and the oldest in New York State. Founded in 1836, the school took the unusual stance that everyone – regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion – deserved an equal education. A majority of the autographs, inscribed to a teacher named Miss Ladly, have small circular portraits. Very fine.
Estimated Value $150 - 200.
