Gagnon, Rene A - One of Three Iwo Jima Survivors. First Day Cover Signed "Rene A Gagnon / Cpl. U.S.M.C." in the upper right corner, dated 11 July 1945, Washington DC canceling US Marine Mt Suribachi flag raising stamp, Scott Catalogue #929. Extremely fine. Corporal Gagnon was one of the three survivors out of the six marines who hoisted the U.S. flag over Mt. Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. The other two survivors were John Bradley (father of James Bradley who wrote "Flags of Our Fathers"); the third survivor was Ira Hayes, a Puma Indian.
