1797 Philadelphia Directory. Published by Cornelius Stafford, "Containing the Names, Occupations, and Places of Abode of the Citizens," as well as "A Register of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Magistrates of the United States--The Constitution of the United States--Officers of the Commonwealth--and Magistrates of the City." 7 ¾" x 5", 203 pages, plus 76 additional pages. Professionally rebound in marble boards and calf-leather spine, with stamped filigree remarque designs and gold-stamped, red leather title. Page 77 has partial lower-right margin paper loss, not affecting the text. A few pages have small margin tears, which have been repaired with archival tape. Light age toning. Clear, legible type. Rare.

This is an alphabetical list of the residents of Philadelphia, including Washington, George, President of the United States of America, 190, High St. Also, Stephen Girard and John Claypool "Upholsterer, 72, South 4th St. " Claypool was the third husband of Betsy Ross, who made the first American flag; Betsy was the actual owner of the upholstery shop. Other listings include tradesmen, tavern owners, blacksmiths, cabinet makers, shoe makers, coachmen, tailors, coopers, gentlewomen, etc.
