Lot 355

1883 Liberty Nickel. With "CENTS". MS-60. One small obverse spot on Liberty's cheek from a higher grade, this late year change incorporated the word "CENTS" on the reverse after a small number of the 1883 without "CENTS" were gold-plated and passed off as $5.00 gold pieces by certain less than honest individuals. These events received the usual unbiased press coverage, with trials involving certain stooges, and before long the reverse die was changed in late 1883. It all makes for a nice story, and no doubt far more of the original without "CENTS" issue have been gold plated to sell to collectors than were ever made to pass as half eagles by today's less than honest thugs.

Realized $63
